In obedience to our yours by letter Nr. 336 dated 26th ult., desiring to be furnished for the information of the Registrar General in England with the most recent return of the population of the Colony,

I have the honor to forward to you, to be laid before His Excellency The Governor, the returns (No. 142) of Census obtained on the 31st December 1854; also, based upon those returns, a return, Nr. 3, of the population of this Colony on the 30th June 1855.

This latter return is necessarily estimated as it was not readily practicable to follow the yearly course of obtaining Census returns from each house: it will be perceived that the total increase during six months is stated to be 958, which is almost wholly confined to the Chinese in the City of Victoria.

As this appears remarkable without data and explanation, I add the following particulars.

A progressive increase of the Chinese population has been visible during the preceding six years, caused undoubtedly by the satisfactory returns of business within, and trade from and to the Colony; houses of a superior class were also gradually replacing the earlier habitations,
